Struggling during the Holidays with cancer ❄️ The Reason Angel Tree Started ❄️

Struggling during the Holidays with cancer ❄️ The Reason Angel Tree Started ❄️

Going through cancer treatment for me has been a great struggle to keep up with everyday duties and especially during the holidays. Every single day I wake up thinking how am I going to get through the day and get stuff done (sick, low energy, or just don’t feel good) whereas before cancer I woke up everyday with energy thinking what am I going accomplish or get done. The first year I was I on treatment for my 4th cancer relapse (targeted therapy and chemotherapy-2012) I experienced a new struggle that I had never encountered with my previous cancer treatments. We had our daughter, family that we always hosted which I did almost all the shopping for (25-40 people) and the Christmas lunch. I love shopping (so it’s fun and not work, lol) but it was a lot when I was healthy with normal energy, so when the holidays arrived I didn’t know how I was going to get through it. Thank god I have a support system and we could afford to pay for help as well when needed!!!!!! Many families that go through cancer may lose part of a salary or all of it when they can’t work and on top of losing income cancer is EXPENSIVE!!! I have always said… I don’t know how families with lower to middle incomes get through this due to all the added costs of cancer. One day I am going to add a list of all the expenses that cancer can add to a person or families. Ex. Prior to this cancer relapse I cooked and cleaned ALOT more, since...

Focus On Hope: Debbie

Focus On Hope: Debbie

Focus On Hope is a year round program where those battling cancer can request to capture a special moment in their journey. Watching your hair fall out can be devastating. Like Jamie and Debbie, many choose to shave their head, rather than allowing cancer and chemo to dictate when they lost their hair. You can choose to take control of this part of your journey, and allow us to help you document this most memorable event. This is a complimentary service! If you would like to capture and embrace this time in your life, please join us for an intimate, complimentary photoshoot where makeup, hair & photography professionals have joined together to offer their services free of charge to help create a great experience for you. TEXANS FAN’S BIG HEART LANDS HER BIG SURPRISE

TEXANS FAN’S BIG HEART LANDS HER BIG SURPRISE

HOUSTON (KTRK) — The theme for Thursday’s game is “Texans Care,” and the Texans gave their fans the chance to win a set of tickets to see it in person. Contestants had to write a 250-word essay about the volunteer work they do and how it’s impacted others and themselves. Nova Sprague, an echocardiographer at MD Anderson, won. “I do ultrasounds on hearts, and so we make sure our cancer patients aren’t getting chemotherapy that will affect the heart,” says Sprague. She spends about 15 minutes with her patients daily and gets to know them well, but she has a special place in her heart for Jamie Gilmore. “She’s very hopeful. She cares about anyone involved with cancer, the patients and their families,” Sprague said. In 2012, Gilmore’s cancer — acinic cell carcinoma — relapsed for a fourth time. During treatment, Sprague performed cardiac ultrasounds regularly and got to know how big Gilmore’s heart really was. “It’s giant. Giant heart, it’s awesome,” Sprague said. Because Gilmore’s cancer is so rare, she started her own charity, Jamie’s Hope, to help raise funds for cancer research. “I’ve always been looking for something to do charity-wise, and it had a connection with MD Anderson, so I thought it was perfect for me,” Sprague said. When Sprague learned about the “Texans Care” contest to award volunteers with tickets to Thursday night’s game, she knew her work with Jamie’s Hope was perfect. “When we met, that’s the first thing we talked about. She goes all the time, and so we bonded on the Texans to begin with,” she said. She applied in a heartbeat....
