Chemo Wednesday, PET Scan Results & Golf Tournament Work

Spent chemo Wednesday and PET scan test result day with Nancy. I was EXTREMELY NERVOUS about my results since my previous scan 2 months earlier was not looking to good. During my last appointment we discussed the possibility of changing my chemo back to more frequent but lower doses. Thank God the results were STABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After a very long day at MD Anderson I still had energy, so we went on a Jamie’s Hope Golf Tournament mission. There was a flyer explosion in the waiting areas!! Flyers on the first floor by the ballon heart. Flyers for the coffee drinkers on the 2nd floor waiting area where you check in to Chemo. More flyers here!! Flyers over there!!! Then last spot finally Nancy leaving flyers on the ATM machine on the way out of MD Anderson ~...

Did you know? Sitting for several hours a day puts your health at risk – even if you exercise regularly.

#CancerPrevention ~ “Extended sitting raises your risk for colorectal, ovarian and endometrial cancers, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” says Karen Basen-Engquist, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Behavioral Science at MD Anderson.  It also increases your risk for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Luckily, reducing your sitting time can be simple. “At least once an hour, get up and move. Stand while you’re on the phone or walk around the house during TV commercial breaks,” Basen-Engquist says. “A few minutes of light activity throughout the day can add up and help lower your cancer risks.” CLICK Here for Tips to Reduce Prolonged Sitting Source: MD Anderson’s Focused on Health – January...

Christmas help needed for families battling cancer!!!

Christmas help needed for families battling cancer!!!

Christmas help needed for families battling cancer!!!  Please read stories, I have included links below. I want to share with everybody why our Angel Tree program was established. Last year (June 2012) I started chemo, over time the chemo gradually wore on me making many things in life more challenging.  I somehow made it through our foundation’s first event last year (Oct. 2012) and then the holidays were right around the corner.  In November I ended up in the hospital with a blood clot, had multiple infections, extreme fatigue, nausea, severe stomach issues, high fevers, etc….  Basically it is like you have the flu almost every day of your life (side effects vary depending on treatment).  Last winter God opened my eyes for the first time during my 17 years of battling cancer. I finally truly understood what this disease does to people and their families.  All my life I never could understand why people chose to give up their fight against cancer, but I now understood (first 3 times I had cancer it was surgery and radiation only).  Cancer is an everyday battle and from one day to the next you don’t know what to expect.  Without my family I don’t know that I would have the strength to fight this. I went from superwoman to super sick and last year was the first time I couldn’t do it all.  For Christmas we normally had 25-50 people over, our tree went up the weekend after thanksgiving, entire house was decorated the same weekend, every person that was with us for Christmas received a gift, everything wrapped like it came from a department store, etc… And last year...

Pets and Cancer

Pets and Cancer

Finally Back to Blogging!!!! Soo much to update on with my health and treatment…. Had a few rough months but started doing much better after we made several changes Will be more in detail later today along with my PET scan results later today (been on chemo for over 14 months now). Been working on my laptop from our couch and think my kitties don’t want me to leave, lol Just something we found interesting after watching the Dog Whisperer on animal planet, they were discussing dogs having the ability to sense cancer (there is scientific research and it is true)!!! So then I stared reading up about cats as well and what we have noticed is since I have been sick our cats have really become more attached and protective of me. Pepper the cat on the right actually growls and hisses sometimes when Garrick just touches my arm (it’s pretty funny) and then if she is sitting by me and awake she swats at people occasionally if they walk by. Not to mention they all follow me in the house EVERYWHERE, even to the bathroom. If I close the door, you would think a cat was dieing on the other side of the door. The 2 in the picture sleep on me EVERY night no matter where I fall asleep at. It is just interesting because we have seen the transformation of behavior since I have been...

Fighting cancer with hope By Erica Quiroz Although Jamie Gilmore’s cancer has relapsed three times, she’s hoping the fourth time will be the charm to finally beat it. Gilmore was first diagnosed at 14 years old with acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), a rare salivary gland cancer. But her most notable experience with ACC happened when she was 20. She had pain on the left side of her face — the exact spot where she had a mass removed six years earlier — and was scheduled for surgery. A happy surprise “This time the tumor was all around my facial nerves,” Gilmore says. “The surgery was going to be five to six hours for removal of the tumor and then another five to six hours for reconstructive surgery.” As Gilmore’s husband and family waited, the anesthesiologist noticed her hormone levels were elevated. “My mom had me on a lot of natural remedies, and I thought that was why,” she says. “When the anesthesiologist came in and said I was pregnant, I was shocked.” Surgery was postponed, and Gilmore was referred to a high-risk OB-GYN at Texas Woman’s Hospital.”My doctor’s first priority was to ensure the safety of the baby,” Gilmore says. “Six weeks after delivery, I would be able to have the surgery.”Gilmore was induced at 38 weeks and her daughter, Mikala, was born Dec. 4, 2002. “She’s our miracle baby,” Gilmore says. Cancer spreads The following January, she went through a 12-hour surgery to remove the cancer and have reconstructive facial surgery.”I looked horrible afterward,” Gilmore says. “But my doctors did a great job, and I couldn’t believe how well the surgery...

Jamie’s Hope featured in MD Anderson’s Promise Publication

Jamie hopes for a cure One patient’s rare cancer inspires collective effort Promise – Fall 2012 – By Erica Quiroz Jamie Gilmore is a fighter. In 1996, she was diagnosed with acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), a rare cancer that affects the parotid gland, the largest of the salivary glands. She’s been in remission from it twice. Now, the 30-year-old native Houstonian is in her third bout with ACC. She created Jamie’s Hope for a Cure with her husband, Garrick Glascock, in May to help fund research for targeted therapy at MD Anderson. “My family and I were surprised that there haven’t been any new developments in ACC treatment,” Jamie Gilmore says. “We thought surely something would be different from 15 years ago.” ACC affects an average of 135 people a year and accounts for 6-10% of all salivary gland cancers. To help create awareness, Gilmore and her family promote Jamie’s Hope by selling maroon and white bracelets for $5. They also collect donations through the website jamieshope.org. “The money we raise funds research for other rare forms of cancer and for people who don’t have a standard form of treatment,” Gilmore says. Jamie’s Hope also partnered with the Texas Realtors® Leadership Program (TRL), after Gilmore, who owns a real estate brokerage firm, joined in March. With the TRL’s help, Jamie’s Hope organized an October gala, “Masquerade for a Cure,” at River Oaks Country Club in Houston, with all proceeds benefiting targeted therapy research at MD Anderson. “Each year the TRL decides on a legacy project that will benefit the community,” Gilmore says. “Once they heard my story and what I’ve...
